New Year…Time to Get Serious!

I recently listened to a training seminar put on by someone that I admire as a business mind and he said that he starts all conversations with potential clients, but asking one very basic question.  He asks them all:

On a scale of 1 – 10 rank how serious you are about achieving your goal?

If someone responds with a number less than 7, he informs them that he is not the man for them.  The meeting is over and he moves on with his day.  If someone responds with a 7, 8, or 9…he asks them what would it take from him to get that number to a 10.  If there is nothing that can be said to get it to a ten or a nine as a minimum the conversation is again over and he moves on with his day.  The logic on this is simple…he wants to work with people that are committed to success.  He wants to work with people who are committed to the projects they bring to him.  He does not want to waste a clients time and more importantly his own time.

As a coach, this same philosophy applies.  As a coach, I often want to sit all my clients down and ask them first what their goals are…then find out what is their commitment to these goals.  In fact, with those people that come looking for special training, and specific goals, I will ask these questions.  And based on their answers as well as what I have seen from them in the past, I make the decision on whether or not to take them on or work with them towards these additional goals.

I tell this, not to say anything about my methods, but to emphasize that your success is about you and your commitment.  It is about you and what you are willing to do and what you are willing to give up in order to reach those goals and reach success.  It is about your commitment to yourself first and foremost.  The coach can and will coach you, but if you are not willing to listen and change habits, you cannot achieve the goal.

The same lesson applies to life.  Your success in life is contingent to what you are willing to do in order to reach your goal.  How committed are you to your projects and your work?  How committed are you to your family and their needs?  How do you balance the two?  What do you do when you are tired?  Are you someone who does everything with a level 5 commitment or are you all in, all the time?

So I ask you…On a scale of 1 – 10, how serious are you about achieving your goals?
